2017/2018 - Diversity of Agricultures

Agriculture in the 20th century, supported by all its actors, aimed to be rid of the dependance on local conditions, with farms on average being bigger and bigger, more specialized, adopting practices and simplified systems requiring external inputs, and based on a concentration of production in certain regions. The gain in yield was very important until the early 2000s at least. This model of agriculture was, however, accompanied by important destruction of natural resources and the awareness of its non-durability from the environmental and health, economic and social point of views.

Within a context that touches all EU country members, French agriculture remains, however, the most diversified with respect to the different national productions. This does not signify, however, that the agricultural systems are not specialized on the farm, territory or sector levels.

To document this question, The Industry & Research Groups were asked to lead an analysis on the diversity of production systems within each sector:

  • Status on different scales (farms, sectors, territories…)
  • Drivers and determinants of diversity
  • Analysis of diversity as a source of resilience
  • Consequences in terms of need for innovation and research

All these contributions were published in the journal Innovations agronomiques n°68 – 2018.

This issue contains an introduction, fruit of reflection led by the Agriculture Scientific Direction of INRAE, based on (1) research studies at INRAE on the question of diversity - particularly by the Environnement and Agronomy (EA) and Sciences  for Action and Development (SAD) Divisions, (2) The contributions of the Industry & Research Groups and (3) reflections arising from different events organized in 2017/2018: internal seminars, conferences at the International Agricultural Fair.
